Project management course FAQs

Straight answers to help you work out what's realistic

Can I study project management online?

Yes. Most project management courses in Australia can be studied online, either at your own pace or with scheduled virtual classes. Some providers also offer in-class or blended options. Support and assessment methods vary, so check the delivery details on each course before you enquire.

How long does a project management course take?

It depends on the qualification and how much time you can give it. A Certificate IV in Project Management Practice usually takes 8-12 months, and a Diploma of Project Management usually takes 12-18 months. Self-paced online courses may let you move faster or slower. Each listing shows the provider's stated duration.

How much does a project management course cost?

Fees vary by provider, qualification level and study mode, so compare the total cost on each course page, including any materials or extra fees. Some diploma-level courses are approved for VET Student Loans, and many providers offer payment plans to spread the cost.

Do I need a qualification to become a project manager?

Not always. Project management isn't a licensed occupation in Australia, and many project managers move into the role from other fields. A qualification can teach you structured methods, show employers your skills and open up roles that list one as a requirement. If you already run projects, ask providers about recognition of prior learning (RPL).

What's the difference between a qualification and a certification like PMP or PRINCE2?

A nationally recognised qualification, such as a Certificate IV or Diploma of Project Management, is delivered by a registered training organisation (RTO) and issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Certifications like PMP and PRINCE2 are awarded by industry bodies once you pass their exam, and some also require work experience. Certification training courses prepare you for those exams, but they aren't nationally recognised qualifications.

Who delivers the courses on learning.com.au?

Every course is delivered by the provider named on its listing, not by learning.com.au. Certificates and diplomas are delivered by registered training organisations (RTOs), and graduate certificates by higher education providers. learning.com.au is a course marketplace operated by Candlefox, and we may be paid by providers when you enquire.

What are the entry requirements for a project management course?

They depend on the course and provider. A Certificate IV usually has few formal prerequisites, while a Diploma of Project Management often expects a Certificate IV or relevant work experience. Graduate certificates generally ask for a bachelor degree or significant management experience. Most vocational providers also ask you to complete a language, literacy and numeracy check before you start.

Can I get credit for my work experience?

Often, yes. Many providers offer recognition of prior learning (RPL), which assesses the skills you already have against the units in a qualification. If you've been running projects at work, RPL could reduce your study time and cost. You'll usually need evidence, such as project documents or references, so ask each provider how their process works.

What jobs can a project management course lead to?

Common roles include project officer, project coordinator, project manager and program manager, in industries such as construction, IT, government, health and events. A course can build your skills and strengthen your applications, but employers also look closely at experience, so most people move into bigger roles over time.

Is a project management course worth it?

It depends on where you're starting from. A course can be worth it if you want structured methods, need a qualification for roles that ask for one, or want formal recognition for experience you already have. If you're already an experienced project manager, an industry certification may be more relevant to your goals. Weigh the total cost and time against the roles you're aiming for.
